Built to protect the harbour, the mouth of the Charente, the port and above all the great arsenal of Rochefort from the assaults of the English navy, Fort Boyard was transformed into a military prison just a few years after its completion.

Over and above the technical feat represented by its construction, Fort Boyard’s worldwide renown is due to the success of a television game show created in 1989, which is still going strong today, with broadcasts in almost 30 countries!

This programme is the only way to admire the interior architecture, as access to the inside of the Fort is forbidden to the public.
